Education Act overhaul with public input

The review of Fiji’s Education Act has been significantly strengthened through a vital inter-ministerial consultation, with the support of the Hon. Minister for Education. The Review Team engaged in fruitful discussions with key ministries, including Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Itaukei Affairs, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Rural Development, and other agencies like Fiji Higher Education Commission and Fiji Teachers Registration Authority; to gather crucial insights and recommendations.
This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive review by incorporating perspectives from government bodies whose work directly impacts children and the education sector.
The Ministry of Women and Children specifically emphasized child safety and rights, while other ministries contributed expertise on funding, cultural relevance, NCDs and community development.
The Review Team spearheading this vital undertaking is led by Chairwoman Ms Rokobua Naiyaga, a distinguished leader with over 50 years of profound experience within the education sector.
Supporting Ms Naiyaga’s leadership are highly experienced legal drafters David Solvalu and Lyanne Vaurasi, who bring a wealth of expertise in navigating and reviewing legislation specific to Fiji. The review is also supported by the Fiji Law Reform Commission and the Office of the Solicitor General.
The Review Team will continue consultations with stakeholders and also conduct an extensive National Public consultation. This is set to commence in the coming weeks and will reach all nine Education Districts through strategically organized clusters, ensuring broad participation in shaping the future of Fiji’s education system. The National Public Consultations will be advertised in the coming weeks before the Public Consultation begin.
