Cabinet approves review and reform of Electoral Laws

Formal discussions have started to review Fiji’s election laws.
A meeting was held last week amongst stakeholders which included Minister for Justice, Attorney Genera, Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudamu, the Permanent Secretary for Justice Selina Kuruleca, Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa, Electoral Commissioner Dr. Atu Emberson-and the Fiji Law Reform Commission (FLRC) Director Raijeli Tuivaga.
The review of election laws was approved by Cabinet in March 2023.
“A holistic approach was endorsed. The Electoral Commission in collaboration with the FLRC spearheading drafting efforts, ensuring comprehensive electoral reforms rather than piecemeal amendments,” said the Ministry of Justice in a statement.
“The goal is to finalize legislative changes before August 2025, ensuring stability before the next General Elections.”
